Shakey Graves, Record Company on the Gondola @ 2014 Blues & Brews

In September we made the trek down to Telluride for one of my favorite festivals of the year – Telluride Blues and Brews. The event closes out festival season and always brings a killer lineup of rock and blues artists to the small mountain town of Telluride. This year, we teamed up with Los Angeles, CA band The Record Company and Austin, TX act Shakey Graves for a few bluesy sessions.

The Record Company is a group that brings energetic old school rock & roll to the stage. The trio consists of Chris Vos on guitar/slide guitar/harmonica/lead vocals, Marc Cazorla on drums and vocals and Alex Stiff on bass and vocals (Stiff played acoustic guitar for the session). Their sound often includes some distortion, but is a minimalist take on rock & roll in a world of pedal effects and digital gadgets. This minimal rock sound worked great for their session, as Vos sang and played slide guitar and then harmonica on their tracks.

I was first introduced to Shakey Graves by fellow Austin, TX musician Kevin McKeown (guitarist and singer of Black Pistol Fire) while talking music after a gig about a year ago. After giving Roll Them Bones a listen, I gave it another listen. Then that went on for a while…

We were amped when the 2014 Blues and Brews announced that he would be playing the festival, and even more amped when we booked him for a session. Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) brought along Chris Boosahda (playing the knees) for a couple of relatively long tracks. The Telluride gondola is a quick trip, and sometimes it is hard to get the timing right and finish the song before arriving at the station. The guys couldn’t have cared less about playing through the station – watch “If Not For You” until the end to see what I mean.

Between the artists we filmed, the brews I responsibly enjoyed and all of the live acts I saw (Buddy Guy, Black Joe Lewis, Bombino and The Violent Femmes were a few of my favorites), I had one hell of a weekend at the 2014 Blues and Brews Festival. Here’s to SBG Productions for hosting another great Blues and Brews, and hope to see you all down there next year!
